Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and ovulation in the broodmare

The use of NSAIDs can have a negative impact on a mare’s reproductive activity.

A study published in 2015 found that both phenylbutazone (bute/PBZ) and meloxicam (Metacam) interfered with pre-ovulatory follicle development.

Mares treated with phenylbutazone or meloxicam failed to ovulate, with the development of hemorrhagic anovulatory follicles (follicles that didn’t release eggs).

These same mares ovulated normally when not treated with NSAIDs.

This is something worth keeping in mind with any broodmare.
